Fall Prevention in Acute Care Hospitals

Fall prevention remains a large challenge in our hospitals. Our goal is to be at or below the national average of 3.31. The Meridian Health Fall Prevention Committee is constantly reviewing the best evidence-based fall prevention strategies. They learned of Dr. Patricia Dykes research in instituting new technology to improve communication within the healthcare team about fall risk. Dr. Dykes' research illustrates the use of a new fall toolkit to assist in fall prevention.

Dr. Dykes is Sr. Nurse Scientist and Program Director for Nursing Research in the Center for Nursing Excellence at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She is also an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. She recently published in the Journal of Nursing Research an article entitled "Impact of an Electronic Fall Prevention Toolkit on documentation Quality of Fall Prevention in Hospitals."
